Sioux Falls Lutheran School is pleased to announce that Mrs. Lisa Compton will serve as our K-12 art teacher at SFLS beginning in the fall of 2020.

Mrs. Compton has been teaching studio arts, art history, and cultural arts since 1985. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education and Business Education, as well as a minor in Studio Art, from Valley City State University, ND. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Hamline University, St. Paul. Over the course of her career in education, Mrs. Compton has taught all ages ranging from kindergarten through graduate studies. For the past nine years, she has served as the art instructor at Children’s Home Society.

“There is not a day that goes by that I don’t learn something new about children, education, dealing with children in trauma, how the arts can influence their therapeutic development or about myself as a teacher,” Mrs. Compton shared about her experiences at CHS.

Mrs. Compton grew up in the Lutheran church and said that she looks forward to sharing her love of the arts, education, and her faith simultaneously in the classroom.

Check out the Q&A below to learn more about Mrs. Compton and her passion for education.

Tell me a bit about yourself and your family.
I grew up in North Dakota. I’ve been in Sioux Falls for nine years. My husband’s job brought us to the area. In our free time we like to travel, fish, hike, explore, and journal. We’re always working on some form of creative project. I have three wonderful adult step-children.

How did you decide to pursue a career in art education?
Art and cultural crafts were always a part of my family. My parents encouraged me to become a teacher or go into business. I did both and added the arts, too.

Tell me a little bit about your teaching style.
In my classroom, I practice disciplined freedom, not freedom from discipline. Inquiry based education has been my focus whether you’re looking at your own work or at historical pieces. My approach to studying the arts is integrative. The arts aren’t so much about creating a pretty picture—though that’s always a wonderful bonus—as they are about skill building and developing a language that helps those creating to express themselves. Having faith integrated into arts is ideal for educating the whole person.
