Ashley Elwell to Serve as SFLS Athletic Trainer through Partnership with Sanford

Sioux Falls Lutheran School is pleased to announce a partnership with Sanford Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, which will provide our student-athletes access to a certified athletic trainer named Ashley Elwell.

Ashley earned her undergraduate degree in athletic training from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and a Master of Public Health from Concordia University, Nebraska. Ashley is a medical professional who can evaluate, treat, and provide rehabilitation therapy to help young athletes prevent and recover from injuries. She has worked as an athletic trainer since 2010 and joined the Sanford team in 2020 as the head athletic trainer for Sioux Falls Storm. In her off season, she visits SFLS and other area schools while also covering events in the community. Prior to working in South Dakota, she has worked in Nebraska, Texas, and Minnesota covering sports ranging from 3rd grade to Division I collegiate and professional levels.

Check out the Q&A below to learn more about Ashley and her passion for athletic training.

How did you decide to pursue a career in athletic training?
When I was in 7th grade, I watched the athletic trainer for a USHL hockey team taking care of players during the game and decided that's what I wanted to do.

What athletic activities do you enjoy in your free time?
Growing up I participated in all sports. Once I was in high school, I concentrated on cross country, bowling, and soccer. I went on to run cross country in college until I started the athletic training program. Currently I stay active by hiking, biking, and weight lifting.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family.
I live in Sioux Falls with my 5-year-old rescue pitbull, Yohan. We have explored a majority of the parks and trails in the area. When I have free time, I like to hang out with my nieces who are 3 and 1. If I'm not visiting friends and family in the Midwest, then I am traveling and going on adventures in new cities.

What are you most looking forward to about working with student-athletes at Sioux Falls Lutheran School?
I am most excited to get to know the athletes, coaches, and parents at Sioux Falls Lutheran and serve the community as best I can. My hope is that I can help athletes be the best they can be on and off the field/court and perform at the top of their game.
