Sioux Falls Lutheran School is pleased to share that Dr. Scott Johnson will join the music team at Sioux Falls Lutheran School in the fall of 2021 as our 7th and 8th grade strings instructor.

Dr. Johnson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Macalester College (St. Paul, MN; 1971), a Master of Music in orchestral conducting from Illinois State University (Normal, IL; 1980), and a Doctor of Philosophy in music education from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL; 1990). He is a retired department chair of music at Augustana University, where he also served as an associate professor of music, music education instructor, and musical theatre director. He previously served as coordinator of instrumental music at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and director of orchestral studies at the University of Central Arkansas, Conway.

Dr. Johnson and his wife have been married for 52 years and have four children–two sons and two daughters–as well as one grandson and one granddaughter. The Johnsons enjoy traveling together in their retirement.

Check out the Q&A below to learn more about Dr. Johnson and his passion for music.

How did you decide to pursue a career in music/music education?
It evolved over several years, during which I was involved with the Ministry of Music. In my last church, the local superintendent of schools was an active member. He had a sudden opening in the high school for an orchestra director and choral instructor, and he approached me about filling the position knowing that I was going to be available, as the entire pastoral staff was changing. The details are interesting, but suffice it to say that I accepted the offer and my career in music education began.

What do you enjoy most about music?
I enjoy the fact that it is the best way to express our feelings, no matter what they are.

Tell me a bit about your teaching style.
I would describe my teaching style as eclectic and interactive.

What do you look forward to about working with middle school students?
I look forward to their energy and inquisitive nature, as well as the opportunity to provide a musical foundation for their entire life.

Favorite Bible Verse:
2 Timothy 2:15 “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” (NIV)
